If Charlie were alive today, I think he would be very happy with the path America is taking. He embraced liberal and progressive ideas even though it got him into trouble. In real life and in his films he stood up for the underdog and those less fortunate. "My motive force is to create good feeling, tolerance and happiness. The character of the tramp, of course, is of the underdog. I am for people. I can't help it. That is the nature of the beast." (London Observer, Sept. 22, 1952)
